The Mid Sussex Field Archaeological Team (MSFAT) was formed in 1987 to carry out archaeological research in the central Sussex area of the United Kingdom. Since then it has carried out numerous fieldwork projects, including the excavation of a Beaker Bowl Barrow, a Saxon cemetery and settlement, Roman pottery kilns, and a Mesolithic hunting camp. It has also undertaken landscape and fieldwalking surveys, and has carried out a number of watching briefs in the area.
The Team currently has over 120 voluntary members, and publishes a newsletter three times a year. In 1996, it was runner up in the Pitt-Rivers Award, at the British Archaeological Awards as a result of its rescue excavations at Friars Oak, Hassocks. Currently the team are working in conjunction with the UCL Field Archaeology Unit in the excavation of a substantial Roman Villa at Barcombe, East Sussex.
Due to the nature of it's membership most MSFAT activities take place at weekends, when members are able to get 'hands-on' experience of archaeology and also excavation techniques. Members are not required to hold archaeology qualifications, as training is provided. Additional training courses are run throughout the year, and discounts are often available to MSFAT members.
Membership is renewed on an annual basis, and cost just £8.
